In the late 1940′s von Neumann studied from a theoretical point of view the problem of self-reproducing automata (see “Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata”, 1966, University of Illinois Press, Urbana). The fundamental details of the machine were published in von Neumann's book Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata, completed in 1966 by Arthur W. It is similar to what John von Neumann [4] called a “universal constructor ” and which, together with a controller, a duplicator and a symbolic description of the machine, are the necessary component of a self-replicating automaton. Von-Neumann Self-Reproducing Automata, Ashby's Homeostat or Walter's Tortoises notably gave rise: 1) to a new vision of the complexity of machines (above a certain threshold of complexity, the description of the structure would be simpler than the description of the behaviour); 2) to a new But, above all, these works are at the origin of one of the most important concepts of modern science, first proposed by Ashby: self-organization, which is a pillar of complexity theory. He did this in 1944 when he gave a series of lectures on the 'Theory of self reproducing automata'. It was designed in the 1940s, without the use of a computer. 2) "Theory and Organisation of Complicated Automata" 5 lectures delivered at University of Illinois in Dec 1949, published in Part 1 of Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata (Ed. & Completed by Arthur Burks) 1966. According to Gregory Chaitin “the world is a giant computer”, “a scientific theory is a computer program that calculates the observations” [3]. €Life” here means a single self-reproducing and self-sustaining biological cell.
