In the late 1940′s von Neumann studied from a theoretical point of view the problem of self-reproducing automata (see “Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata”, 1966, University of Illinois Press, Urbana). The fundamental details of the machine were published in von Neumann's book Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata, completed in 1966 by Arthur W. It is similar to what John von Neumann [4] called a “universal constructor ” and which, together with a controller, a duplicator and a symbolic description of the machine, are the necessary component of a self-replicating automaton.
